Ramappa Temple becomes India's 39th UNESCO World Heritage Site

Why in News?

On July 25, the United Nations Educational,, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) inscribed the 13th-century Ramappa Temple in Palampet, Telangana as a World Heritage Site.

About Ramappa Temple :-
1) Ramappa Temple built by Kakatiya General Recharla Rudra, during the period of the Kakatiya ruler Ganapati Deva. 
2) Main Deity of Ramappa Temple - Ramalingeswara Swamy. 
3) Ramappa Temple was built in Kakatiya/Vesara/Bhumija Style. 
4) Marco Polo, during his visit to Kakatiya empire, allegedly called the temple "the brightest star in the galaxy of temple". 
5) The temple is named after the sculptor Ramappa, who built it and is perhaps the only temple in India to be named after craftsman who built it. 
6) Official name :Kakatiya Rudreshwara Temple

Architecture :-

Ramappa Temple was built in Vesara/Kakatiya /Bhumija style, which is Hindu temple. The temple is built on 6 feet (1.8 m) high star-shaped platform. The main structure is in red sandstone, but the columns round the outside have large brackets of blach Basalt. These columns are carved with mythical animals or female dancers or musicians, and are masterpieces of Kakatiya art. The roof of the temple is built with bricks, which are so light that they are able to float on water.
There are two small shive shrines on either side of the main temple. The enormous Nandi within, facing the shrine of Shiva.
