Union Minister of state (Independent charge) science and technology ; Minister of state (Independent charge) Earth Sciences Dr. Jitendrasingh released "IndiGau", India's first Cattle Genomic Chip for the conservation of pure varieties of Indigenous cattle breeds like Gir, Kankrej, Sahiwal, Ongole etc.
The chip has been developed by the scientists of National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NAIB), Hyderabad, an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Department of Biotechnology. The chip will help in achieving the goal of conservation of our own breeds with better characters and help towards doubling farmers’ income by 2022.
Why its important to conserve the Indigenous breeds :-
1) Crossbreds are more productive but their tendency to wilt under Indian conditions of low input and harsh climate and susceptibility to tropical diseases warrants the conservation and development of indigenous breeds.
2) The annual loss in milk production of cattle and buffaloes due to thermal stress in 2020 is about 3.2 million tonnes of milk.
3) Indigenous cattle are well known for their quality of heat tolerance and ability to withstand extreme climatic conditions.
4) So, the urgency for protection and conservation of indigenous breeds cannot be over emphasised.
5) For instance breeds like Punganur, Vechur and Krishna Valley breeds are rapidly declining and require immediate attention.
6) The milk of indigenous animals is high in fat and Solids-Not-Fat (SNF) content.
SNF - SNF are the substances in milk other than butterfat water in the form of casein, lactose, vitamins and minerals which contribute significantly to the nutritive value of milk.
Key points about "IndiGau":-
1) IndiGau is purely Indigenous and the largest cattle chip of the world.
2) The chip is to achieve the goal of conservation of our own breeds with better characters and help towards doubling of farmers income by 2022.
3) The manufacturing of this chip is in synergy with Rashtriya Gokul Mission and a great example of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
4) Further, the chip exemplifies the application of scientific knowledge and innovations for “Ease of Living” for all sections of society.
